IEF delegation visited INGV and University of Trieste

From September 27 to October 3, the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting (IEF) delegation of four people, headed by the Deputy Director Xiaodong ZHANG, paid a visit to Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and University of Trieste in Italy.

The Chinese side introduced the activities of IEF and China Seismic Experimental Site (CSES), and gave two talks on “site effects and shallow structures derived from the ambient noise in the North China Plain” and “gravity anomalies and isostasy deduced from new dense gravimetry around the Tsangpo Gorge, Tibet”. Prof. Carlo Doglioni, the INGV president, welcomed the delegation and gave brief introduction to INGV. Five researchers from INGV talked about the multidisciplinary approach to pre-earthquake, INGV national earthquake observatory, volcano earthquake interactions, current cooperative projects to study earthquakes from space between China and Italy, etc. The two parties discussed the research fields both interested and collaborative possibilities in future.

During the meeting in INGV, the delegation also visited the seismic room and Tsunami Alert Center.

IEF and INGV-Section of Palermo (INGV-Pa) signed an agreement for collaborative research on earth degassing processes and their relationships with the active tectonics and seismicity in different geodynamic settings, fluids geochemistry along active faults as tools for geochemical surveillance and risk mitigation, laboratory experiments on the relationships between rock deformation and fracturation and volatiles release, etc.

Based on former academic exchanges over the development of CSEC, the delegation had further deliberation with the research group, headed by Prof. Panza Giuliano and Prof. Fabio Romanelli, from the Department of Mathematics and Geosciences, University of Trieste, achieving consensus on forward cooperation in CSEC.
