CSES acts as a Sponsor of the International Symposium on Deep Earth Exploration and Practices (DEEP-2018)

International Symposium on Deep Earth Exploration and Practices (DEEP 2018) was held in Beijing, from 24 to 26 October 2018.  Acting as a sponsor, China Seismic Experimental Site (CSES) participated in the organization of DEEP 2018. Prof. Zhongliang Wu, director of the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting (IEF), worked as one of the co-conveners organizing the session “Seismicity, volcanism and deep processes”.

Deep processes related to seismicity and volcanism have both the spatial and temporal components in which the temporal component is important for the monitoring and forecast of these geo-hazards. In recent years, emerging technologies have made it possible to detect, observe, and model the time-dependent deep processes related to the initiation and occurrence of earthquakes and volcanoes. Exchange on up-to-date progress in this field has clear implications for social sustainability and for scientific understanding of deep processes at different spatio-temporal scales.

This session is relatively small in the symposium, mainly focusing on the phenomenology and physics of earthquakes and volcanoes and their relation with deep structure. It attracted altogether 15 Chinese and overseas experts and scholars, who came from the fields of geology, geophysics, geodesy, and seismology, to contribute their perspectives and insights on the study of seismicity, volcanism and deep processes. There were altogether 8 oral presentations by scholars from University of Trieste, University of Missouri, Russian Academy of Sciences, Michigan State University, Chinese Academy of Science, and China Earthquake Administration, and 7 posters.
