On August 1 – 5, under the Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, China Earthquake Administration (IEF CEA), signed in October 27, 2018 in Beijing, a return visit of Chinese seismologists took place in the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPE RAS) with the participation of scientists from the Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IEPT RAS). The Chinese delegation of six scientists was headed by the Deputy Director of IEF CEA Professor Shi CHE. The visit aim was to continue the dialogue on the further development of scientific cooperation in the field of earthquake prognosis and seismic hazard assessment, including the possibility of joint researches on experimental seismological sites established in China in recent years.

An official meeting with the leadership and representatives of the IPE RAS and IEPT RAS was held on the first day of the Chinese colleagues visit. Director of the IPE RAS Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dr. Sergey Tikhotskiy told the Chinese colleagues about the history of our Institute and the main directions of scientific activity.

The head of the Chinese delegation declared gratitude for the invitation to visit IPE RAS. He expressed the hope that this visit will give a new impulse to the active development of bilateral cooperation and will expand the understanding of the results of research conducted by the staff of IEF CEA in the framework of the scientific program on Sichuan – Yunnan prognostic test site. As a sign of friendship and cooperation, Sergey Tikhotskiyawarded a commemorative medal of O.Schmidt to Professor Shi CHE.

After welcoming words according to a good tradition the Chinese colleagues took a brief tour of the IPE RAS laboratories equipped with modern research facilities. They viewed the press room of the Center for Petrophysical and Geomechanical Research of the IPE RAS (CPGR IPE RAS) and look through the possibilities of experimental studies on rock destruction using the high-pressure servo-hydraulic test system GCTS RTR-4500, which allows testing on rock samples under conditions simulated reservoir.
The demonstration of the capabilities of the laboratory equipment complex for paleo- and petromagnetic measurements on the basis of cryogenic (SQUID) magnetometer 2G Enterprises 755 SRM, which is extensively used by IPE RAS scientists in studies of the Earth’s magnetic field evolution and magnetostratigraphy was of particular interest to foreign guests. In conclusion, the Chinese colleagues visited the Laboratory of Strong Earthquakes and Seismometry well-known for researches in the field of seismic hazard assessment in the areas of location of particularly important facilities in Russia and abroad, headed by
Dr. Ruben Tatevossyan.

After a short walk around Moscow, the visit continued in the Geophysical Center of the RAS (GC RAS). At the seminar held under the leadership of the Scientific Director of the GC RAS and the President of the National Geophysical CommitteeAcademician Alexey Gvishiani, Chinese colleagues learned about the advanced studies of the Geophysical Center and got acquainted with the project “Spherical Visualization” . Representatives of IEF CEA expressed interest in further cooperation and exchanged contacts (more about the visit to the GC RAS in the note of the Journal “Vestnik of  ONZ RAS”).

On August 3 and 5, the scientific program of the visit was continued by a two-day workshop in the library hall of IPE RAS, where Russian and Chinese scientists presented scientific talks on the ongoing researches and future experiments.

Chinese seismologists reported on the capabilities and structure of the created Chinese seismic networks (the talks of Dr. Ke Sun “China Seismic Experimental Site (CSES): Overview and Its Conceptual Design” and Prof. Cuiping Zhao “A Real-time Earthquake Reporting System via AI Launched at China Seismic Experimental Site”); about triggering effects and connection of seismicity with manifestations of volcanism of high-mountain regions of China and Tibet talks of Prof. Weijun Wang “Several triggering cases in mainland China” and Prof. Yuanyuan Fu“Seismic constraints on the origin of late Cenozoic intraplate volcanism in the southeastern margin of Tibetan plateau”), as well as the expected prospects for using deep drilling technologies to determine the characteristics of fault zones (talk of Prof. Bing Xue “China Seismic Experiment Site: Drilling observation technology and experiment”).

Scientists of IPE RAS presented talks on the algorithm for creating maps of expected earthquakes and the results of its testing over the past 30 years (talk of Dr. Alexey Zavyalov“Algorithm “Map of Expected Earthquakes” (MEE): Summary of the 30-years Testing Worldwide and Latest Findings”) and laboratory experiments on modeling of the various stages of the seismic process performed at IPE RAS (talk of Dr. Alexander Ponomarev “Laboratory-scale modeling of seismic process”). These investigations were previously carried out within the framework of the Russian-Indian projects of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and RSF(grant № 16-47-02003) to study induced seismicity in the area of the Indian reservoirs Koyna-Varna and allowed to explain the seasonal migration of seismic activity in this tragically known region (read more). The presented talks started the process of discussing the new joint studies of core samples, which are planned to receive Chinese colleagues in the framework of the scientific program of deep drilling.

Another thematic block of the workshop was devoted to the discussion of cooperation and exchange of experience in the field of seismic activity prognosis, which is of great interest to Chinese colleagues due to the high seismic activity in most of China. Five talks were presented on this theme. Prof. Alexey Lyubushin spoke about the studies of long series of seismic noise and the possibilities of predictive assessments on its basis (“Investigation of long series of seismic noise records for the purpose of earthquake prediction”).

The invited participants of the workshop from IEPT RAS told about developments in the field of earthquake prognosis carried out in the Institute (talks of Director of IEPT RAS Dr. Peter Shebalin “Forecasting of Aftershock Activity”; Deputy Director PhD Anastasiya Nekrasova “Unified Scaling Law for Earthquakes: Implications for Seismic Hazard and Risk Assessment”; Dr. Alexander Gorshkov “Unraveling Earthquake-Prone Areas for the Purposes of Seismic Hazard Assessment and Earthquake Prediction” and Dr. Vladimir Kossobokov “Testing of Earthquake Predictions and Associated Hypotheses”).

The workshop meetings were held in a friendly atmosphere, the reports aroused mutual interest and lively discussion. The parties expressed deep interest in cooperation.

In addition to constructive scientific communication, a pleasant surprise was the awarding of Dr. Alexey Zavyalov and Dr. Vladimir Kossobokov by Certificates of Invited Professors by the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting CEA.

The visit of the Chinese colleagues continued with work meetings in IEPT RAS, which were also attended by representatives of IPE RAS, GC RAS and Geophysical Servey of the RAS (GS RAS) and on August 7, the return visit of the IPE RAS delegation to China began.

One of the goals of our visit is the participation of the representatives of IPE RAS in the Third Geophysics Symposium for Young Scientists, which will be held at Peking University. Three young scientists of IPE RAS have been invited to participate in this Symposium by the Head of the Geophysical Department of the School of Earth Sciences and Space (SESS PKU) Prof. Jenuan Ning. Another equally important goal is to discuss cooperation between the IPE RAS and SESS PKU in research directions lined out during the last visit, in October 2018. It is expected that a program of concrete steps will be developed to coordinate joint Russian-Chinese projects for international competitions of RFBR and other funds, as well as to discuss the implementation of exchange programs for young scientists of our institutions” – Deputy Director of IPE RASPhD Vladimir Kamzolkin told about the plans of the Russian delegation.

The trip agenda also includes a visit to the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, Chinese Earthquake Administration. It is expected that this meeting will be devoted to the first results of the Russian-Chinese Meeting held at the IPE RAS.
