Project Leader Galip Yüce was Interviewed by a Famous Media/Newspaper in Turkiye
On 6th of February, two earthquakes with a magnitude more than 7 struck Turkiye and also the world, killing many people and resulting great losses. In fact, people in this country had experienced such disasters many times in history.
As a hydrogeologist in Turkiye, and also a co-leader of the IGCP-724 “Fluid geochemistry and Earthquake Forecasting”, Prof. Dr. Galip Yüce was recently interviewed by the University media “Gazzete Hacettepe”, and Gazzete Hurriyet which is a very famous newspaper in Turkiye. He told the reporter that there are geochemical anomalies of groundwater before and during earthquakes and he had captured those anomalies in the previous studies based on the monitoring stations constructed upon the active faults. Meanwhile, he admitted that it is unlikely to forecast an earthquake accurately at present as the occurrence of earthquakes is so complex and quite impossible. However, we have no choice but to go on our researches, as even a small step forward can help saving more lives. This is why he chose to join in the IGCP-724 project, an international cooperation project set by UNESCO.
Dr. Galip Yüce took a long time to introduce the background and the aim of the IGCP-724 project, and said he hoped that more and more scientists can get involved in the field of earthquake forecasting.
