IEF held “Workshop on the Challenges of the Continental Earthquake Science Experiments (CESEs): Science, Technology and Coordination”

Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, China Earthquake Administration (IEF CEA) held the “Workshop on the Challenges of the Continental Earthquake Science Experiments (CESEs): Science, Technology and Coordination” after the International Conference for the Decade Memory of the Wenchuan Earthquake, on May 16, 2018, in Beijing.

Invited by director of IEF, Prof. Zhongliang Wu, 9 foreign experts from USA, Italy, Russia and Japan participated in the workshop. They were John Vidale, Dean’s Professor at University of South California and the Director of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC), Giuliano Panza, OLIM Professor of seismology at University of Trieste, Alexey Zavyalov, Head of the Laboratory of Seismic Hazard, Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences, Yifeng Cui, Director of High Performance GeoComputing Laboratory, San Diego Supercomputer Center, Yosihiko Ogata, Professor Emeritus at Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Bogdan Enescu, Associate Professor at Kyoto University, Yosuke Aoki, Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo, and Bruce Shaw and Gareth Funning from SCEC.

Two sessions were held at the workshop. One was about the role of basic research in seismic hazard assessment and operational earthquake forecast, and another was about field experiments in earthquake science: experiences and lessons. There were 15 oral presentations made, including 6 by scholars of IEF from the fields of geodesy, seismology, gravity, geochemistry and geophysics.

China Seismic Experimental Site welcomes experts from all countries to come and conduct comparative studies. As said by Prof. Wu, director of IEF, “If you love your model, come to China. If you hate your model, come to China.”
